Ethnography blog
Let's try this blogging stuff. Respond:
1.) Brainstorm and list ten subcultures in this area.
2.) Describe three which you think would be most feasible to study and why.
3.) Describe three which you think would be the most fun to study and why.

There are many subcultures in our area, some of which are the elderly in nursing homes, different religious denominations, athletes, choir kids, band kids, farmers, doctors, factory workers(like CHART!), golfers, and people knowledgeable in compueters and electronics and such.
The subcultures that would be easiest to study would be groups that are in the area, such as farmers and the elderly folk. Others might be hard to get to often enough to really get a feel for the culture.
The most fun for me would most likely be the different groups of older men that meet at Lau's bakery because I've already been a bit exposed to them. I often go to the bakery to enjoy the delicious donuts served there and see the men at their tables. I've come to recognize a few of them and hearing their stories would be really interesting, but it seems as if many people have thought of this idea so it's not very origianl or outlandish anymore.
Ellen:
Do you think they would look down on us because we're too "goody-goody"? I do like it though and think it would be very interesting.

Wonderful ideas, everyone. How about some ideas from neighboring communities? Russian community in Shakopee, inmates at Shakopee Women's Prison, Somali population in Faribault, clients at Alpha Women's Center (unwed mothers) in Prior Lake, Battered Women's Shelter in Belle Plaine, Green Giant plan workers in Montgomery, to name a few. Can you think of others outside of New Prague?

Some subcultures one could study outside of New Prague are tailgaters at Gopher football or basketball games, an Amish community, or an AA group.
